James Edward “Ted” Smith (1933-2016) was a dedicated painter who made Kamloops, BC, his home and artistic inspiration.
Best known for his abstract landscape paintings, Ted captured the unique beauty and natural character of the region through bold brushwork and expressive colour. His commitment to the arts spanned decades, and his work can be found in private collections throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Ted’s deep connection to the Kamloops arts community was reflected in his ongoing relationship with the Kamloops Art Gallery, where his paintings were exhibited many times in both solo and group shows. He was not only an accomplished artist but also a passionate supporter of the local arts scene.
In honour of his life and legacy, his estate established the Ted Smith Endowment Fund to support the Kamloops Art Gallery, with a preference for painting-related initiatives — ensuring that future generations of artists and art lovers can continue to be inspired by the creative spirit that Ted embodied.
